For more than a decade, Michal Hromek has been widely acclaimed for his guitar renditions of Celtic themes and other ancient melodies from the British Isles. In 1990 he released his debut album Celtic Guitar, which won high praise and sold well both in the Czech Republic and abroad. This album features a selection of the best that he recorded for the Bonton and Sony/Bonton labels, as well as a new bonus track recorded especially for Supraphon Music. Its 17 tracks contain about 70 minutes of enchanting music, including tunes with English, Scottish and Irish roots, arrangements of folk songs, homage to Turlough O'Carolan, and Hromek's own compositions. His guitar partners with a number of other instruments, both guest artists and members of his current band, the Michal Hromek Consort. The selections are drawn from the albums Celtic Guitar, Beyond the Lion and Unicorn, Folk-Baroque and the Other Rags for Guitar(s), The Wild Mountain Thyme, and Five Bells. "The Broom of he Cowdenknowes! is the striking bonus track. Melodic folk roots, performing experience and the passion of the musicians, Hromek's love for this music, and his singular talent for sharing it with others make this compilation an extraordinary treasure.
